Your privacy
At 1800RESPECT, the safety, wellbeing and privacy of the people we support is our highest priority.

Confidentiality
Our counsellors provide safe, accessible and trauma-informed counselling, information and support.
We record interactions to improve our service. If you contact us on the phone, you can request for your call recording to be turned off at any time during your conversation.
Contacts made through our text, chat and video call channels are also recorded. If you do not wish for your interaction with these channels to be recorded, please call 1800RESPECT on 1800 737 732 to speak to a counsellor and request that your call not be recorded.
Information about how to protect your privacy is provided before you connect with a counsellor.
You are also welcome to use a fake name or pseudonym when contacting 1800RESPECT.
We will not give your information to anyone else unless:
- You have given permission for us to do so
- You or someone else is in immediate danger
- We are required to do so by law. For example, to comply with mandatory reporting requirements in relation to suspected cases of child abuse and neglect, or in response to a subpoena.
Subpoena requests
We can receive subpoenas requesting us to produce personal information for use in civil or criminal court proceedings.
All subpoena requests received by 1800RESPECT are subject to a review process involving a panel of legal and clinical specialists. This process may include contacting you if we receive a subpoena for your personal information and considering whether there are legal grounds to object to the release of information. When a subpoena or search warrant is served to 1800RESPECT, the service may be required to provide case notes, transcripts, or copies of records.
Further information about our approach to requests for information and subpoenas is available here: Request for Information.
